Review: Wisdom's Kiss by Catherine Gilbert Murdock

Title: Wisdom's Kiss
Author: Catherine Gilbert Murdock
Format: Hardback*
Pages: 284
Genre: YA Fiction Fantasy
Stand-Alone or Series: Stand-Alone
Summary: Princess Wisdom, known as Dizzy, longs for a life of adventure far beyond the staid old kingdom of Montagne.
Tips, a soldier, longs to keep his true life secret from his family.
Fortitude, an orphaned maid, longs only for Tips.
These three passionate souls might just attain their dreams while preserving Montagne from certain destruction, if only they can tolerate each other long enough to come up with a plan. Tough to save the world when you can't even be in the same room together.

My Thoughts:
Lately I've been reading, & loving, a lot of fairytale inspired books. They're kind of a happy median between fantasy & contemporary. Wisdom's Kiss was a bit different than the others I've read lately though.
Instead of being told from the point(s) of view of 1 or 2 characters, Wisdom's Kiss is told from many. The main points of view were Wisdom's, Ben's, Tips', Trudy's, Felis el Gato's, & Wilhelmina's. The story is told through memoirs, diaries, letters, plays, & even a few encyclopedia entries. While all of this added something to the story & did aid in making it unique, at times it could also be a bit dizzying.
The pace of the book was good. It never became boring or too slow. I did feel, at times, like I was missing something though. I'm assuming it's because I haven't read Princess Ben & the missing details from some of the stories in Wisdom's Kiss are in it. This leads me to think that Wisdom's Kiss is more of a companion novel.
The characters were brilliant. There was only one I truly didn't like; an insufferable little man who worked for Wilhelmina & swore too much. I'm still not sure what to say about Ben other than I think everyone wants a grandmother like that(or at least a friend of the family). She was a very enjoyable character, as was Escoffier. Trudy was by far my favorite. I related to her the most & found it hard not to get swept up in her story. While I found myself ecstatic & cheering for Dizzy & Tips my heart was breaking for Trudy at the same time. As for Wilhelmina, well... Who doesn't love a good villainess? ;) I do wish we would've found out for sure if Trudy was in love with the man she ended up with though.
In all, I enjoyed Wisdom's Kiss. If you're looking for a good fairytale inspired read Wisdom's Kiss might just be the book you're looking for.
