Genre: YA Paranormal/Fiction
Stand-Alone or Series: Series
Summary:
Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shape-shifter, and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.
So much for normal.
First off I have to say oh...my... Wow. Just wow. This book was(and is), as Evie & Lish would say, bleeping* fantastic! It's the first book I've read for 2011 & what a way to kick off the new year. I love the storyline of this book; it's different and refreshing.Even though there are loads of paranormals in it it's not your standard paranormal YA. One of the paranormals doesn't even realize they are one(talk about an identity crisis). Unlike a lot of YA novels out right now two of the main characters(Evie & a certain someone) don't fall in love 5 seconds into the book. It was nice to see their relationship fully develop from being strangers(and possibly enemies) to friends and finally falling in love. I also really liked the way Kiersten White developed the characters throughout the book. Each one got exactly the details they needed when they needed. She didn't skimp on details, but the book wasn't overburdened with them either. Kiersten is also a remarkable storyteller; working twists and turns into the plot flawlessly. Throughout the book I found myself guessing at what would happen next. Though many of my questions were answered, at the end I found myself asking 'What will happen next?'.** Even if you're tired of all of the vampires, werewolves, & fairies out there don't hesitate to pick up a copy of this one. It definitely deserves a chance & I for one can't wait to see what Ms. White creates for us next!
P.S. - It also has a gorgeous cover. One you will totally 'get' if you do read the book. Evie rocks & proves that girls who love pink & sparkles can still be smart & totally kick butt!(Sorry I had to add that :) )
*Sorry you'll have to read the book to get the joke. ;)
**Luckily there will be a sequel(two in fact) to Paranormalcy. The next book in the trilogy, Supernaturally, is slated for a Fall 2011 release(that information came straight from Kiersten White).
